Collins Lake is rated good to excellent, and this was the week of really big trout. Cal Kellogg landed two trout over 8 pounds and one over 10, with the pink Trix Worm the hands-down number one bait. The big fish also came on a pink Trix Minnow paired with a Turbo Flasher. Fish are 10 to 15 feet deep, trolled at 1.8 to 2.5 mph.

How is Collins Lake fishing right now?

Good to excellent, and it was the week of really big trout. Cal Kellogg had two trout over 8 pounds and one absolute beast over 10 pounds. The lake is catching a mix of standard Lassen rainbows and lightning trout. Trophy time in the foothills.

What is the best bait at Collins Lake?

The hands-down number one bait this week was the pink Trix Worm. Two of the three really large fish came on it. The big trout at the start also came on a pink Trix Minnow paired with a Turbo Flasher.

What depth and speed are working?

Fish are coming from about 5 feet down to 20 feet, with 10 to 15 feet the most consistent zone. Surface lines are not producing, so run your deeper lines. Cal is trolling anywhere from 1.8 to 2.5 mph.

What are the water conditions?

Surface temps start around 61 to 62 degrees and can spike to 65 or 66 in the backs of sunny, wind-protected coves. Even with breeze it stays above 60, which is keeping the fish aggressive.

What else is producing?

Honorable mention goes to pastel-colored Trigger Bugger flies and orange Metal Head Flies, which had very good results at times. Cal will be back next week with another Collins Lake update.
