What is working right now

Bait fishing is on fire at Collins Lake, with Cal Kellogg boxing 12 rainbows to 3 or 4 pounds for three anglers. The water is a cold 46 to 47 degrees, so anchor up and soak Rainbow garlic PowerBait spiked with Power Powder. Best depth was 12 to 25 feet, a touch deeper than expected. Give each spot 20 to 30 minutes, then make a short move.

What is biting at Collins Lake right now?

Rainbow trout, and the bait bite is phenomenal. Cal Kellogg put 12 fish in the box for three people, with a good grade of 3 and 4 pound rainbows and no giants but plenty of above-average fish.

How deep are the Collins Lake trout in late January?

A little deeper than usual for the shallow winter pattern. The best range was about 15 to 25 feet, with hooked fish running from 12 to 20 feet down. The deeper lanes out-produced the shallow lanes on this cold day.

Bait or trolling at Collins Lake?

Bait fishing is the clear winner in 46 to 47 degree water. Cal anchored up rather than trolling because he could not match his bait numbers on the troll. Trolling can produce a few fish midday, but bait puts fish in the boat.

What is the hot bait setup?

Rainbow garlic PowerBait spiked with Power Powder, paired with a small piece of a garlic Gulp worm threaded on the leader just below it. That combination pushes a lot of scent into the water and was head and shoulders better than anything else.

Cal's outlook for Collins Lake

The lake is full of fish and every spot but one produced. Get comfortable, give a spot 20 to 30 minutes, and if you get bit, stay put. Cal is booking trips through June and expects great fishing into spring.

From the report (Capt. Cal Kellogg): My experience tells me everything should be shallow right now, but the deeper lanes have been performing better than the shallow lanes today. We got a few fish up shallow, but our best depth range is probably anywhere from 15 to 25 feet. My fish were a little deeper than I expected them today. We hooked fish anywhere from 12 to about 20 feet deep.
