What is working right now

Striped bass season is just getting going on the Feather River, right around the historical April 1 start. Capt. Wes Hoskin is fishing 10 to 12 feet of water and shallower with high flows, back bouncing and drifting minnows through pockets. Water sits around 54 to 55 degrees. Fish are not schooled up yet, but limits are there for anglers willing to work.

Are the Feather River stripers biting yet?

They are just starting. Capt. Wes Hoskin was on scouting missions around late March into April 1, the historical time to start targeting stripers. Fish are not schooled up yet, but he has been able to scrape out limits by working for them.

Where and how deep are the fish holding?

With water running big, Wes is focusing on 10 to 12 feet of water and shallower. Pocket fishing, back bouncing minnows, and a little drifting have been the most successful approaches.

What are the water conditions?

Water temperatures are about 54 to 55 degrees on the Feather River. The Sacramento River was still a little dirty, and Wes expects both rivers to fish well over the next week as flows settle and the water clears.

Guide's outlook for the Feather River

Wes expects the striper bite to pick up through early April. He notes weekend boat traffic is heavy, and reminds anglers that guides on these navigable rivers are required to carry a US Coast Guard captain's license.

From the report (Capt. Wes Hoskin): We're going to really start to pick up here the beginning of April, which is the historical time to start targeting stripers. Water is running big right now, so we're really looking for 10 to 12 feet of water and shallower. We have water temperatures right now about 54 to 55 degrees. They're not schooled up yet, but if you want to come out here and catch a few fish for dinner, it's not a problem.
