What is working right now

Lake Almanor is fishing like a spring potluck. Browns, rainbows, and strong smallmouth bass are all in the mix. Surface temps sit near 50 degrees in the morning and climb toward the mid to upper 50s. The shallow minnow-plug bite is on its way out as docks go in and bass move up. The lake is 4 feet from full, and the post-spawn rainbow bite is about to turn on. Shop trout trolling gear from Capt. Bryan Roccucci's lineup.

What is biting at Lake Almanor right now?

It is a true multispecies potluck. Capt. Bryan Roccucci is catching a mix of browns, rainbows, and smallmouth bass, with the smallmouth coming on strong this past week. Browns are running from 2 pounds to well over the double-digit mark, rainbows are going 3 to 5 pounds, and there are quality smallmouth up to 4 and 5 pounds. He even landed a catfish.

Where are the fish and what water are you avoiding?

The shallow bite has been the play, but it is fading. Bryan is steering clear of Hamilton Branch on the east shore because it is kicking out a lot of mud and dingy water. The Feather River and Bailey Creek are pushing cleaner water. The lake is on the rise and sitting about 4 feet from full.

What are the water and weather conditions?

Light winds and mostly sunny skies have the surface temperature near 50 degrees in the morning, rising into the mid 50s and scratching the upper 50s in spots. All the tributaries are running high. Big aquatic bug hatches are starting to pop off with the warmer conditions.

What presentation has been working?

The recent bite has been a shallow minnow-plug bite for the mixed bag of trout and bass. That pattern is on its way out as docks get installed and bass push in. No specific Catch America lure was named in this update.

What is Capt. Bryan Roccucci's outlook?

He expects the bite to keep going and get better. Rainbows are finishing their spawn, the bug hatches are ramping up, and it is only a matter of time before the post-spawn rainbow bite really turns on. Beautiful spring fishing conditions are set to continue.
