What is working right now

Lake Berryessa trout are biting well for Big Nate, with most fish in the top 30 feet. Fast-troll Optimizers and Catch America spoons run clean, and dress them with the new Chrome Killer Scent. The deeper marks in the bait balls are not active yet, so stay up top. Kokanee and King Salmon should turn on over the next month or two.

What is biting at Lake Berryessa right now?

Beautiful rainbow trout, and plenty of them. Nate Kelsch got on another great bite on a consult trip after dialing in the boat's electronics and downriggers. A couple of early kokanee also showed up, a sign the kokanee bite is right around the corner.

How deep are the Berryessa trout in January?

Focus on the top 30 feet. The fish are just starting to drop, and some good marks down deeper are beginning to bite, but the deepest fish in the bait balls are still inactive and not worth chasing yet.

What lures are working at Lake Berryessa?

Spoons are carrying the bite. Nate is running Optimizers and the Catch America Berryessa spoon package, and trolled a few stick baits too. Fish were hitting just about everything up top. Fast-troll the spoons and run them clean.

What scent is Nate using?

The new Chrome Killer Scent, developed with Pro-Cure and Catch America. Nate calls it a game changer and the only scent he needs. It also shines on shoe-peg corn for the Bullards Bar kokanee bite.

Nate's outlook for Lake Berryessa

Trout fishing is still strong and Nate expects another great year. He picked up an early kokanee last week, and King Salmon should be picking up in the next month or two. Cover water to find the schools, then stay on top of them.

From the report (Capt. Nate Kelsch (Big Nate)): Most of the fish that we caught were, I'd say, top 30 feet. The fish are starting to drop a little bit, we're starting to get some good marks there that are starting to bite, but still not those deep ones down in the bait balls. Those fish are still down there, not too hungry, not active, so you still want to focus top 30 feet presentations. We use these Catch America spoons, we use optimizers, we trolled a few stick baits.
