What is working right now

Warmer temps are bringing in the big ones. Sacramento River stripers are red hot, with limits for every boat every day drifting minnows. Collins Lake trout jumped to good-to-excellent in the top 10 feet on the pink Trix Minnow. Don Pedro is a strong medium-plus near 60 degrees on Junior Optimizers and frozen shad. Folsom is rising fast, with fish scattered.

How are the Sacramento River stripers?

Capt. Jeff Goodwin reported a very good start to striper season, with limits for every boat every day since it opened. The main technique is drifting minnows, sitting on the edges with one or two ounces on a dropper and a number one or 1/0 light wire hook. Some anglers are pulling plugs as well.

How is Collins Lake fishing?

Capt. Cal Kellogg says it jumped to good-to-excellent, with the small planters declining and the average trout getting bigger. The pink Trix Minnow was the most consistent producer. He also scored on an orange Turbo Flasher with a threaded nightcrawler and an orange Junior Trigger Spoon. Keep baits pink and in the top 10 feet at about 2 miles per hour. Bait anglers scored on garlic power bait in 15 to 20 feet.

How is Don Pedro Reservoir fishing?

Capt. Monte Smith rates it a strong medium-plus, with water temps near 60 degrees and 10 to 11 feet of visibility. The lake is less than 28 feet from full. Frozen shad on a harness and Junior Optimizers fast trolled are producing. One trip landed 12 king salmon, keeping 10, plus four nice rainbows.

How is the Sacramento and Feather River striper bite?

Capt. Wes Hoskin rates the Feather River slow with good clarity, and the Sacramento River medium and a little dirtier at about 58 degrees. Most success is coming on minnows fished on anchor over sandbars in 10 to 12 feet. A striper derby was set for the weekend out of the Colusa State Park boat launch, so expect crowds.

How is Folsom Lake fishing?

The Folsom bite was tough, with one boat scratching a single fish one day and doing better another with three rainbows and a 19 inch king down about 30 feet. The water level is coming up fast, roughly 10 feet in three days, so watch for floating debris and expect scattered fish.

Primarily we're using a technique of drifting minnows. We don't need a lot of weight. We are sitting on the edges with one or two ounces on a dropper, and a number one or 1/0 light wire hook is best for live minnows.

Jeff runs 10 ounces of weight to reach bottom in the deep water, with 12 to 18 inch droppers and about a 48 inch leader. The lead gets the plugs down where the fish hold since they will not dive that deep alone. How do you wrap plugs for Sacramento River salmon?Double-wrap the plug with fresh sardine and a piece of wild-caught prawn. Jeff also wraps tuna and squid. Start with a loose wrap that keeps the hooks free so you do not tie them to the plug body, then add a couple of wraps on top. More bait draws more bites as long as it does not kill the action. How do you tune a Brad's KillerFish plug?Wrapping bait shifts the center of gravity, so a plug that ran straight can start leaning one way. The fix is the eye: if the plug swims to the right, turn the eye to the left. Test it beside the boat until it dives straight and dances side to side. Out of tune plugs will not get bit. What does massaging the plug mean?It means keeping continuous action on the plug so it never sits dead on the bottom. Pull up on the rod to make the plug dart to one side, then drop the tip so it flutters back. Salmon often hit on that flutter, so be ready for a hard, full-on strike that takes line right away. What is working right now Northwest Oregon's July focus is offshore ocean coho with Chinook mixed in, running 1 to 7 miles out with flashers, hoochies, and various lures and baits. Capt. Coastal cutthroat, catch-and-release sturgeon on the Columbia, and halibut round it out, with albacore tuna still about 100 miles out. What is biting in Northwest Oregon right now?Ocean coho with some Chinook mixed in is the main focus, fished 1 to 7 miles offshore. Capt.
