Spring is turning on across Northern California. Shasta browns and rainbows are in the top 20 feet on divers and side planers. Don Pedro kings to 4 pounds are chewing as temps near 60 degrees on Junior Optimizers and frozen shad. Collins Lake trout are in the top 10 feet on the Trix Minnow. Feather River stripers are just getting going. Berryessa is on fire on Trigger Spoons.

How is Shasta Lake fishing?

Capt. Jeff Goodwin reported really good fishing, with lots of brown trout, some rainbows, and even an early kokanee. Fish are in the top 20 feet of the water column, with water around 50 degrees. Best techniques were divers and trolling with side planers. Warmer weather ahead should bump the bite.

How is Don Pedro Reservoir fishing?

Capt. Monte Smith rated it a medium plus and improving, with water temps climbing from the mid 50s toward 60 and 12 feet of visibility. He is running lures including Kokanee Killers, small spoons, and Junior Optimizers from Catch America. Kings to 4 pounds came on frozen shad fished on a harness.

How is Collins Lake fishing?

Capt. Cal Kellogg rated it fair and improving, with trout in the top 10 feet. Fish came on the orange Junior Trigger Spoon, the orange Trix Minnow, small Rapalas off a diver, and a white and red Trigger Bugger. Top fish went about two pounds.

How are the Feather River and Sacramento River stripers?

Capt. Wes Hoskin was scouting the Feather River for striped bass around April 1, the historical start. Water was running big, so he focused on 10 to 12 feet and shallower, back bouncing and drifting minnows. Water was about 54 to 55 degrees. Both rivers should fish well as flows settle and the Sacramento clears.

How is Lake Berryessa and the foothill lakes?

Capt. Nate Kelsch had an epic week at Berryessa with trout, king salmon, crappie, and bass, 20 to 30 fish a day. He trolled the Trigger Spoon Junior and Trigger Spoon smothered in Chrome Killer scent, from 10 down to about 35 feet. Pardee, Camanche, and Amador are producing near the plants on long leaders and power bait.

What about Folsom Lake and the Delta?

Wind kept the Folsom boat off the water this week. On the Sacramento Delta, the pro staff caught three keeper stripers on deep diving minnows, and a trip to the American River produced a steelhead on a nightcrawler and diver combo.

We caught some rainbow trout as well, and we just got a kokanee an hour ago, so that's noteworthy for this time of year. Best techniques have been divers and trolling with side planers. What technique is working for Sacramento River king salmon?Back-bouncing Brad's KillerFish KF15 and KF16 plugs on the bottom. Jeff runs 10 ounces of weight to reach bottom in the deep water, with 12 to 18 inch droppers and about a 48 inch leader. The lead gets the plugs down where the fish hold since they will not dive that deep alone. How do you wrap plugs for Sacramento River salmon?Double-wrap the plug with fresh sardine and a piece of wild-caught prawn. Jeff also wraps tuna and squid. Start with a loose wrap that keeps the hooks free so you do not tie them to the plug body, then add a couple of wraps on top. More bait draws more bites as long as it does not kill the action. How do you tune a Brad's KillerFish plug?Wrapping bait shifts the center of gravity, so a plug that ran straight can start leaning one way. The fix is the eye: if the plug swims to the right, turn the eye to the left. Test it beside the boat until it dives straight and dances side to side. Out of tune plugs will not get bit. What does massaging the plug mean?It means keeping continuous action on the plug so it never sits dead on the bottom. Pull up on the rod to make the plug dart to one side, then drop the tip so it flutters back. Salmon often hit on that flutter, so be ready for a hard, full-on strike that takes line right away. What is the guide's outlook for the Barge Hole?Jeff says the area is about 2 to 3 weeks out from really good fishing. August, September, and October are the prime months, and a late fall run from November through the end of December produces some of the biggest fish of the season. What is working right now Northwest Oregon's July focus is offshore ocean coho with Chinook mixed in, running 1 to 7 miles out with flashers, hoochies, and various lures and baits. Capt. Coastal cutthroat, catch-and-release sturgeon on the Columbia, and halibut round it out, with albacore tuna still about 100 miles out. What is biting in Northwest Oregon right now?Ocean coho with some Chinook mixed in is the main focus, fished 1 to 7 miles offshore. Capt.
