What is working right now Lake Oroville is full and tough in May 2026. Capt. Brett Brady is scratching out king salmon and rainbow trout, with kings around 85 feet and trout near 35 feet on white hoochies and 360 rollers. Bait is scattered. He expects the bite to concentrate and improve in June and July. Bullards Bar kokanee are small so far, biting typical kokanee gear and T-Pex in pink and orange. How is the fishing at Lake Oroville right now?Tough. Capt. Brett Brady and his buddy Ron scouted Oroville and landed three fish: a king just over 4 pounds, a rainbow around 4 to 4.5 pounds, and a smaller 18 inch rainbow. Bait is scattered and light, though the lake is completely full and beautiful. What depth are the fish holding at Lake Oroville?Brett found trout around 35 feet and the salmon down near 85 feet in May 2026. The fish are scattered rather than concentrated, so cover water. He is running a mix of white hoochies and 360 rollers to search for the marks. We caught three fish total for today: one nice king going a little over four pounds, another rainbow going over about four, four and a half pounds, and then a small rainbow about 18 inches. Kokanee are still scattered and not worth targeting yet. The hot action is spotted bass, with reports of 8 and 9-pounders on every point. Lower-elevation lakes are coming into good shape as spring nears. What is biting at Bullards Bar Reservoir right now?Trout are picking up, with Capt. Brett Brady taking nice fish up to about 3 pounds on the Brady Bug. The bite is fair but improving after a tough January. The real hot action is spotted bass on every point, with reports of 8 and 9-pound fish. How is the kokanee fishing at Bullards Bar?Slow. The kokanee are still really scattered and Brett is not targeting them much at all yet. What is working right now Early fall steelhead are in the Feather River in October 2025. Capt. Brett Brady targets fast, shallow water 3 to 8 feet deep with a bait-based drift: a snap swivel, a number four hook on 8 pound fluorocarbon, a soft egg tied in an egg loop, and a homemade Slinky weight. Incidental salmon show up but the season is closed. Watch the flows, they drop fast. What is biting on the Feather River right now?Early fall steelhead. Capt. Brett Brady of Bare Bones Guide Service ran the Feather and landed several fresh, fast-fighting steelhead, including a double hookup, plus incidental salmon. The steelhead run pairs with the salmon spawn, usually starting late September into October as the water cools. Where do you find steelhead on the Feather River?In faster, shallower water, generally 3 to 6 or 8 feet deep. Brett looks for riffles with moving water rather than deep holes. The Feather has tremendous bank access through the Oroville wildlife area, so you can fish either side once you find a fast run. How does Brett rig for Feather River steelhead?Bait-based. Start with a snap swivel, then an 8 pound fluorocarbon leader about 3 to 4 feet long to a number four Gamakatsu or Owner hook tied with an egg loop. Warm, soft cured eggs go in the loop. A soft Slinky weight bounces over rocks without hanging up. What should anglers watch for on the Feather River?The flows. Brett warns the river can drop drastically and become dangerous, so check the information gauges before running a jet boat. Salmon are closed, so release them in the water without netting. Brett Brady): So we're looking for steelhead, and we're going to be looking for water that's moving pretty fast and not too deep. Generally, three to six, eight feet is what we like to see. We got a number four Gamakatsu hook or Owner. We got eight-pound test fluorocarbon on about four-foot long leader. On our hook, we've tied a very special knot, it's called an egg loop.
