Wishon Reservoir Fishing Report | August 25, 2025
Report by Max Gross Max Gross is part of the Catch America team and shares weekly reports from Central California waters. What is working right now Wishon and its sister lake Courtright are fishing steady in late August 2025 with fresh plants of pan-sized rainbow trout. Max from Catch America recommends blade-and-crawler combos: run a 4 to 6 inch dodger with a spinner, or a dodger to a 24 to 36 inch leader and a slow death hook threaded with a worm. Both lakes were planted this week. How is the fishing at Wishon Reservoir right now?Steady at both Wishon and sister lake Courtright. Max reports Courtright got an unexpected plant last week and Wishon is being planted this week, so expect plenty of pan-sized planter rainbows. He says those planters are still fun to catch and become good eating with a little time. What is working at Wishon Reservoir?Blade-and-crawler combinations. Max runs a 4 to 6 inch dodger paired with a spinner such as his Max's Rings wedding-ring style or an Uncle Larry's spinner. That flash-and-bait presentation is the go-to for the planted rainbows at both lakes right now. How do I rig a slow death hook at Wishon?Run a dodger to a 24 to 36 inch leader, depending on dodger size, then tie on a slow death hook and thread a worm on it. Max says the jagged walleye-style hook holds the worm through many bites, so you get plenty of use out of each one. Why are Wishon and Courtright fishing similar? They are sister lakes that feed water back and forth to generate power, so conditions track together. Max notes Courtright usually gets planted less than Wishon, so this week's plants at both mean strong numbers of pan-sized rainbows across the pair. Watch the full report From the report (Max Gross): Right now, the fishing has been steady at both lakes. Blade and crawler combinations are going to be the way to go. I'll run a 6-inch dodger or a 4-inch dodger, and then I'll either run my Max's Rings, or you'll see the Uncle Larry's as well. Another combination is just running a dodger to a leader, like a 24 to 36-inch leader, and then a slow death hook. Wishon Reservoir August 25, 2025 FAQ What are anglers catching at Wishon Reservoir in August 2025?Pan-sized planter rainbow trout, freshly stocked at both Wishon and Courtright this week. What is the best setup for Wishon right now?Blade-and-crawler combos: a 4 to 6 inch dodger with a spinner, or a dodger and leader to a slow death hook with a worm. What size dodger does Max run at Wishon?A 4 inch or 6 inch dodger. Max says he does not go bigger than that. What leader length works with a slow death hook at Wishon?A 24 to 36 inch leader off the dodger, depending on the size of the dodger. Was Courtright Reservoir planted recently?Yes. Max reports Courtright got an unexpected plant last week and Wishon is being planted this week. What depth or trolling speed does Max recommend at Wishon?A specific depth and trolling speed were not specified in this report. Shop the Tackle Mustad Slow Death Hook Shop Trout Gear

Report by Max Gross Max Gross is part of the Catch America team and reports on the high-country lakes above Fresno. What is working right now Wishon Reservoir is on fire for numbers, with 30 to 40 pan-sized rainbows, 12 to 16 inches, per trip. Nearby Courtright is holding bigger fish, so run lead lines of three to four colors or a downrigger with Uncle Larry's Hoochies or Trix Trigger Squids on an action disc. Max also runs his new anise-based WD80 scent. Start early to beat the heat and crowds. What is biting at Wishon Reservoir right now?Rainbow trout, and the bite is non-stop. Max Gross of Catch America is getting 30 to 40 fish almost every trip, though they are pan-sized rainbows around 12 to 16 inches. He has not found browns there this year. Bigger fish are reportedly up at nearby Courtright. What lures are working at Wishon and Courtright?Hoochies are hot at Courtright. Max recommends Uncle Larry's Hoochies and bigger squids, plus the Trix Trigger Squids fished with an action disc on top, which he says makes all the difference. Whether you run a dodger changes the combination. How should you rig at Courtright Lake?Run lead lines of three colors, maybe four, or throw a downrigger. Pull Uncle Larry's Hoochies or Trix Trigger Squids with an action disc. Max has had good luck on browns with the bigger squids. Dodgers are optional depending on your setup. What scent is Max using? His own new WD80 scent, an anise-based UV gel he built for the Central Valley. Between the color, UV, stickiness, and anise scent, he calls it a killer, and notes anglers plan to use it for salmon since anise is in salmon mixes too. What is the outlook for the Fresno high country?Max recommends heading up the mountain to Wishon and Courtright to escape the 100-plus degree heat and the crowds on the lower lakes. Start early to beat both. Depths and trolling speeds were not specified in this report. Watch the full report From the report (Max Gross): Wishon and Courtright, as far as the bite goes, it is on, it is non-stop. 30 or 40 fish, almost guaranteed. They're all pan-sized rainbows, 12 to 16 inches. If you're going to go to Courtright, lead lines, three colors, maybe even four. Report by Max Gross Max Gross reports from the Catch America warehouse in Fresno and fishes the Central Valley and southern Sierra lakes. What is working right now The Shaver Lake kokanee bite is still strong in late July 2025, with fish holding 50 to 60 feet deep. Start early to beat the recreational boat traffic. Troll slow at 1.0 to 1.4 mph with corn-tipped lures, and marinate your corn overnight in Chrome Killer or Power Powder to stand out. For trout, bump up to about 2.7 mph with a Speed Spoon. How is the Shaver Lake kokanee bite?Still strong. Max Gross reports the kokanee holding a manageable 50 to 60 feet deep. With triple-digit valley heat, plan for a shorter early day, because recreational boaters will crowd the lake and cut lines as the morning goes on. Start early and fish first. How do you troll for Shaver Lake kokanee?Troll slow at 1.0 to 1.4 mph with corn-tipped lures. Everyone runs corn, so set yours apart by marinating it in scent. Max uses Chrome Killer corn and has also sprinkled Power Powder on his corn, letting it marinate overnight or even on the drive up. What works for trout at Shaver Lake? After the early kokanee bite, pick up speed and switch to trout closer to 10 or 11 AM. Max says anglers running Speed Spoons have had really good luck, so bump your trolling speed up to about 2.7 mph to fish them right. How is Wishon Reservoir fishing?Wishon has been producing like crazy this year with good water temps and levels. The fish dropped a bit with the heat, now holding around 3 to 4 colors, roughly 15 to 20 feet down. Use your fish finder and target areas near runoffs where cooler water enters. What is the outlook for Shaver Lake? The kokanee bite should hold up if you start early and slow-troll scented corn. Beat the boat traffic and heat with an early launch. For a bonus, run a Speed Spoon faster for trout later in the morning. Watch the full report From the report (Max Gross): The kokanee bite is still on. They are about 50 to 60 feet deep, which is really not that bad. Troll slow, go 1 to 1.4, and tip them with corn. All the guys out there are going to be running corn, so set your corn aside from the rest. Marinate it. I know Big Nate does his Chrome Killer corn. I have used Power Powder from Cal in my corn too. Shaver Lake July 28, 2025 FAQ How deep are Shaver Lake kokanee in July?About 50 to 60 feet deep. What trolling speed for Shaver Lake kokanee?Slow, 1.0 to 1.4 mph with corn-tipped lures. How do you make your corn stand out at Shaver?Marinate it overnight in Chrome Killer corn scent or Power Powder. What lure works for Shaver Lake trout?A Speed Spoon run faster, around 2.7 mph. For bigger fish, switch to Junior Optimizers. Spread Trigger Scent on the dodgers, spinners, and T-Pexes to boost bites. Jacob spread Trigger Scent on everything, the dodgers, the Uncle Larry's spinners, and the T-Pexes. Max says Trigger Scent works really well in the Central Valley, and this trip backed that up again during a standout brown trout bite at Edison. What is the outlook for Edison Lake?Max highly suggests Edison right now for the unusual all-brown bite. He expects the hot action to continue for anglers who troll T-Pexes and spinners on gold dodgers and speed up with Junior Optimizers for size.
