What are the flows and conditions on the Truckee River?
The flows are absolutely perfect for early June, anywhere from 600 down in some spots up to 900 through the canyon. Water has a slight bit of color down in the canyon but overall it is great. Water temperatures are consistently in the mid 50s, with a couple cool mornings dipping into the high 40s.
What bugs and flies are working on the Truckee?
A little bit of everything. Fish are eating mayflies, caddis, stoneflies, and crayfish. There are still some blue winged olives and late March browns around, plus the first yellow sally stoneflies of the season and a golden stone. Caddis range from size 20 micro caddis up to some 14s. None of the hatches are super prolific, but the bugs are around.
What technique is producing on the Truckee?
Dry fly fishing has been good if you find the right spots, so do not be afraid to throw a dry. The standout is the hopper dropper, which is absolutely crushing it in 3 to 4 feet of water or shallower. A few fish are coming on ants. The fish are everywhere, in deep slow runs and in fast bubbly pocket water, so do not walk past any water without making a few casts.
What about the Little Truckee?
They increased flows again on the Little Truckee, running around 450, which is high for the first week of June, so be careful crossing. Most fish over there are eating small stuff, so a size 18 baetis and a San Juan worm will put you in good shape. A few spawners are still around the upper parking lot, so watch out for them.
