Truckee River Fishing Report | May 23, 2025

Report by Catch America Pro Staff
A fly-fishing report from the Truckee River, filed for Catch America by partner guide Matt Heron of Matt Heron Fly Fishing.
What is working right now

The Truckee River is in spring runoff, high but not blown out, with flows between 700 and 1,000. The color is good, almost clearer than usual. Nymphing has been the most effective technique, with fish keying on baetis, blue-winged olives, and March browns plus caddis around lunchtime. If you pick one bug, a size 18 baetis. Streamers and a little dry-fly action are producing too. Shop Catch America fly fishing gear.

What are the Truckee River conditions right now?

It is spring runoff. The river is high but not in flood stage, with flows between 700 and 1,000 depending on where you are. The color is good, almost a little clearer than anglers like for spring. Weather is back to normal late-spring conditions in the 60s.

What are the fish eating?

Bugs, and lots of them. Baetis, blue-winged olives, and March browns have been all over the water around lunchtime, plus caddis from size 14 to 18. If you had to pick one fly it would be a size 18 baetis, which is small for these flows, but the fish are eating them.

What technique is working best?

Indicator nymphing has been the most effective the last week or so. That said, anglers are getting a bunch of fish on streamers, and when clouds rolled through the baetis hatch produced some really good dry-fly fishing. You can also add crayfish, rubber-legs stonefly patterns, eggs, and San Juan worms.

How is the Little Truckee fishing?

The Little Truckee is flowing high but gin clear, which is normal for a tailwater. Keep the fly selection small. Eggs and worms are about as big as you want to go, and most fish are coming on size 18 and 20 baetis mayflies. It is busy, but the fishing has been fun.

From the report (Catch America Pro Staff): Right now the river is high, but it's not blown out. The flows are somewhere between 700 and 1,000. Nymphing all three of those has been producing fish pretty consistently. If you made me pick one, it would be maybe like a size 18 baetis. Indicator and nymphing has been the most effective technique.
