The Metal Head Fly was engineered by Cal Kellogg for one specific purpose: getting the largest rainbow trout in the spread into the net. The weighted metal head gives it a distinctively erratic, darting action at high trolling speeds that standard marabou flies simply can't match, triggering the aggressive reaction strikes that produce trophy-class fish. It performs best in open-water trolling situations where rainbow trout are chasing minnow-profile baitfish near the surface or in the upper water column, and it works equally well behind a dodger on a short drop-back or solo on a flasher rig. Available in 27 proven color patterns across the full range of light conditions.
Sold as a 2 pack
Overview
Trophy trout can’t resist the Metal Head.
Designed by legendary lure designer Cal Kellogg, the Metal Head Trolling Fly by Catch America was originally created to excel at high-speed trolling. However, extensive on-the-water testing revealed an unexpected advantage—this fly maintains its deadly action even at finesse speeds down to 1.3 MPH. That means more bites, more versatility, and more big fish in the net.
With its premium blend of natural fibers, latex strands, tinsel, and crystal flash, the Metal Head delivers unmatched realism in both movement and appearance. The subtle pulsing action mimics an injured baitfish, triggering aggressive strikes from trout, landlocked salmon, and other predatory fish.
Trophy fish hunters trust the Metal Head for a reason—it produces. Cal has personally landed trout up to 13 pounds, and countless anglers across the U.S. and Canada have hauled in 6+ pound monsters with this fly. It has earned a permanent spot in the trolling spreads of serious anglers who refuse to leave success to chance.

Metal head orange fly, disc & Cals lead core rod landed this beauty Fish On 🎣🎣 Catch America has made me a better fisherman, never enough tackle, you just don't know what works on given day but the plan with "it's my favorite lure or color" just accept it & try something different, Fish On 🎣🎣
I caught all five fish on a pink metal head trolling from 1.8 mph to 4.6 mph. We were in a 5 mph zone cruising at 4.6 mph when I threw my line out just for the heck of it and caught one. I couldn’t believe it.
I haven't had much luck with the spoons yet but the metal head flies are amazing. We don't have trout or salmon in my lake but the flies were catching everything. I did make a video on it but it's too big to upload to this site. I don't know if I can put a link here but if you search Pole Bender Fishing on Youtube the video is titled ' I trolled a fly and caught a monster'. I'll definitely be ordering more flies!

I love these metal heads. I’ve been using these for years. I use these at Alcova lake up here in Wyoming and they worked great on the Kokane trout here.
Flies came well packaged. They appear well made and very durable. Colors are vibrant.. I was surprised to find that action discs were also included. Thank you
Used the metal head fly on the Egegik River in Alaska for Silvers.
4 casts 4 hook ups.
Wish the hook was a little heavier.🎣
As a side note, my order #15690 was not shipped complete.
I have not received the gold dodger. Please review your records and let me know your findings.
Thank you, for the great Tackel.
The Pink and White, and Orange metal heads were absolutely killer on the 1.5-3lb rainbows this past weekend. Viscous rod bending strikes one after another. Just ordered more of them!
The Metal Head Fly is a trophy trout trolling fly designed by lure maker Cal Kellogg and sold in a 2-pack. Built originally for high-speed trolling, it also holds its action down to finesse speeds, so it earns a spot in the spread when you are hunting big trout.
What speed range does the Metal Head Fly work at?+
The Metal Head Fly works across a wide window. At 1.3 mph it gives a subtle pulsating action for finicky fish, and at 3 mph and up it switches to an aggressive darting motion. That range means one fly covers both finesse days and fast search trolling.
What is the Metal Head Fly made of?+
The Metal Head Fly blends natural fibers, latex strands, tinsel, and crystal flash for realism in both movement and appearance. That mix gives it a subtle pulsing action that mimics an injured baitfish, which is what draws aggressive strikes from trophy trout.
How do I add attraction to the Metal Head Fly?+
Run the Metal Head Fly behind a dodger or flasher. The added sweep and flash pull fish in and enhance the fly's own pulsing action. Adjust depth with lead core line, snap weights, or a downrigger to put the fly in front of holding trout.
What lure pairs with the Metal Head Fly?+
Pair the Metal Head Fly with the Trigger Spoon in your trolling spread. Run the flashy metal spoon to call fish in fast, and let the pulsing Metal Head Fly seal the bite. Together they give trout both a hard flash and a lifelike baitfish target.
