What is working right now

Collins Lake is fishing fair with the trout spread out from the surface down to 57 feet. Capt. Cal Kellogg's number one bait is the pink Trix Worm, which fooled a jumbo lightning trout, backed by a pink Trix Minnow and Trigger Scent. Best depth was 30 to 37 feet at about 2 mph, run clean with no dodger.

How is Collins Lake fishing right now?

Cal rates it fair. The problem is not a lack of trout, it is that the fish are super spread out from the surface all the way down to 57 feet. The lake is only 3 feet from maximum pool and big schools of shad have shown up, so the trout are full and scattered.

What are the best baits at Collins Lake?

The pink Trix Worm is the number one bait and got the big lightning trout, plus several other hookups. Cal also scored on a pink Trix Minnow and a pink trolling fly. Basically anything pink you have confidence in, dressed with Trigger Scent.

What depth and speed work at Collins Lake?

Best depth was 30 to 37 feet, though fish are workable from about 20 to 40 feet, and shallower early in the morning. Target speed has been 1.8 to 2.2 mph, so work around 2 mph. Cal is running his soft plastics clean with no dodgers or flashers.

What is the outlook for Collins Lake?

Good things ahead. As the surface warms, the shad and trout will drop and stratify around 30 to 40 feet, setting up excellent downrigger trolling. Put in your time now, be patient, and there are some very big trout available.

From the report (Capt. Cal Kellogg): The bite at Collins Lake right now, I'd rate it as probably fair. To catch fish we had to be patient. We religiously used my Trigger Scent. We pulled a lot of soft plastics. The trout are super spread out, from right under the surface all the way down to 57 feet. Best baits for me were the pink Trix Worm, which got our big lightning trout, and a pink Trix Minnow. I'm not using any dodgers or flashers. Best depth was 30 to 37 feet, target speed about 2 mph.
