Kokanee season is kicking off. Lake Berryessa and the Eagle Lakes are giving up trout, kings, and kokanee to 17 inches from 15 to 60 feet on stick baits and corn with Chrome Killer Corn. Collins Lake is still excellent 15 to 30 feet on the bubblegum Trix Minnow. Shasta, Whiskeytown, and Trinity kokanee are turning on with dodgers, hoochies, and Uncle Larry's spinners.

Remembering Uncle Larry Barnes

The fishing community lost a legend. Uncle Larry Barnes, inventor of Uncle Larry's spinners and a fixture at Sacramento Pro Tackle, passed away this week. Guides across the state ran his spinners in tribute. Catch America is proud to carry Uncle Larry's spinners. Rest in peace, Uncle Larry.

Where is the hottest bite this week?

Lake Berryessa and the Eagle Lakes. Capt. Nate Kelsch put together full limits of big trout plus kings and kokanee to 17 inches, with fish from 15 to 60 feet chasing marks. He is running corn and stick baits smothered in Chrome Killer Scent, and tipping hooks with corn cured in Chrome Killer Corn.

How is Collins Lake fishing?

Still excellent, though the full moon made fish a little tentative and short-striking. Capt. Cal Kellogg is holding 15 to 30 feet on the bubblegum pink Trix Minnow with Trigger Scent at 2 miles per hour. To convert short strikers he swapped in a small red treble on a few baits. The bite goes right back to excellent as the moon wanes.

What is working at Lake Almanor?

Capt. Bryan Roccucci reports a finicky but fun spring bite. He mixes fast Trigger Spoons and Junior Optimizers with slow soft plastics and night crawlers, 15 to 35 feet, downsizing the presentation. He released a 27-inch brown that hammered a soft-plastic minnow scented with Brown Town Scent.

How are the Shasta-area kokanee and kings?

Turning on. Capt. Jeff Goodwin is moving to Shasta, Whiskeytown, and Trinity. Kokanee are already going at Whiskeytown, and Shasta and Trinity have king salmon. This is a slow-troll dodger bite: dodger and hoochie, dodger and spinner and beads, dodger and spoon combos, tipped with corn and scented with garlic or tuna. Trinity kokanee are bigger than normal.

What about the foothill lakes?

Lake Amador fish have pushed to 15 to 35 feet. Run Trigger Spoons, Trigger Spoon Juniors, and Optimizers fast, 2.7 to 3.3 miles per hour, with Chrome Killer Scent. Comanche and Pardee stay tough with no boats. Fish long leaders and power bait right when they plant.

From the report (Catch America Pro Staff): We ended up getting I think three kings, five kokanee, full limits of big Eagle Lake trout. We got kokanee up to 17 inches. These fish are still anywhere from 15 feet, we got fish all the way down to 60 feet today, chasing marks. Get yourself some chrome killer scent. Run it. You won't be disappointed.

What technique is working for Sacramento River king salmon?Back-bouncing Brad's KillerFish KF15 and KF16 plugs on the bottom. Jeff runs 10 ounces of weight to reach bottom in the deep water, with 12 to 18 inch droppers and about a 48 inch leader. The lead gets the plugs down where the fish hold since they will not dive that deep alone. How do you wrap plugs for Sacramento River salmon?Double-wrap the plug with fresh sardine and a piece of wild-caught prawn. Jeff also wraps tuna and squid. Start with a loose wrap that keeps the hooks free so you do not tie them to the plug body, then add a couple of wraps on top. More bait draws more bites as long as it does not kill the action. How do you tune a Brad's KillerFish plug?Wrapping bait shifts the center of gravity, so a plug that ran straight can start leaning one way. The fix is the eye: if the plug swims to the right, turn the eye to the left. Test it beside the boat until it dives straight and dances side to side. Out of tune plugs will not get bit. What does massaging the plug mean?It means keeping continuous action on the plug so it never sits dead on the bottom. Pull up on the rod to make the plug dart to one side, then drop the tip so it flutters back. Salmon often hit on that flutter, so be ready for a hard, full-on strike that takes line right away. What is the guide's outlook for the Barge Hole?Jeff says the area is about 2 to 3 weeks out from really good fishing. August, September, and October are the prime months, and a late fall run from November through the end of December produces some of the biggest fish of the season. What is working right now Northwest Oregon's July focus is offshore ocean coho with Chinook mixed in, running 1 to 7 miles out with flashers, hoochies, and various lures and baits. Capt. David Johnson still has late spring Chinook in Tillamook Bay as a wind backup. Coastal cutthroat, catch-and-release sturgeon on the Columbia, and halibut round it out, with albacore tuna still about 100 miles out. What is biting in Northwest Oregon right now?Ocean coho with some Chinook mixed in is the main focus, fished 1 to 7 miles offshore. Capt. David Johnson is also still catching late spring Chinook out of Tillamook Bay. Coastal cutthroat, halibut, and catch-and-release sturgeon on the Columbia are all available too.
