What is working right now

Kokanee season is in full swing. Lake Berryessa gave up double limits of big kokanee 40 to 70 feet down on corn cured in Chrome Killer Corn and Uncle Larry's spinners. Collins Lake slowed to fair on the bubblegum Trix Minnow 17 to 25 feet. Bridgeport and Twin Lakes are strong on Trigger Spoons and the bubblegum Trix Worm. Don Pedro and Shasta kings and kokanee are on.

How is the Lake Berryessa kokanee bite?

On fire. Capt. Nate Kelsch got double limits of big kokanee on his first dedicated kokanee trip, plus released rainbows. Fish are 40 to 70 feet down and hammering gear. The key is corn cured with Chrome Killer Corn, tuna oil, and dye, run behind dodgers with Uncle Larry's spinners. Chase marks and stay off the crowd.

How is Collins Lake fishing?

Slower, rated fair to good. Capt. Cal Kellogg is catching most trout 17 to 25 feet deep and marking fish to 40 and 50 feet. The number-one bait is the bubblegum pink Trix Minnow spiked with Trigger Scent. A spoon bite is starting on the orange Trigger Spoon Junior at 2 miles per hour.

What about Amador, Comanche, and Pardee?

Lake Amador fish are 20 to 40 feet. Run Trigger Spoons and Trigger Spoon Juniors fast with longer setbacks and Chrome Killer Scent, since fish are not that deep and pressure is up. Comanche and Pardee stay tough. Bomb long casts with long leaders and rainbow-glitter or chartreuse power bait right when they plant.

How are the Shasta kokanee?

Excellent. Capt. Jeff Goodwin is getting limits of clean 14 to 16 inch kokanee 35 to 50 feet down. This is a slow troll, 1.1 to 1.5 miles per hour, behind Catch America Dodgers with spinner rigs tipped with corn and garlic-tuna scent.

What is working in the Eastern Sierra?

Capt. Wes Hoskin reports good fishing on Bridgeport Reservoir and Upper Twin Lakes. Bridgeport is a trolling bite on the gold-pattern Trigger Spoon with prisms. Upper Twin is best on the bubblegum Trix Worm with an action disc, trolled in shallow water. Water is cold, mid 50s at Bridgeport and 48 in the morning at Twin.

How is Don Pedro fishing?

Really good. Capt. Monte Smith is catching kings a pound and a half to 5 pounds plus a few kokanee and a 7.5-pound German brown, all 50 to 80 feet down. On windy days he runs spoons for boat control, and when it lays down he runs dodgers and lures tipped with corn.

From the report (Catch America Pro Staff): We got some big old slob kokanee right here. This is our chrome killer corn, tuna oil, tablespoon and a half of chrome killer and some dye. First trip of the year targeting kokanee, we got them double limits. All these fish are anywhere from 40 feet all the way down to about 70 feet, and they are hammering gear.

What technique is working for Sacramento River king salmon?Back-bouncing Brad's KillerFish KF15 and KF16 plugs on the bottom. Jeff runs 10 ounces of weight to reach bottom in the deep water, with 12 to 18 inch droppers and about a 48 inch leader. The lead gets the plugs down where the fish hold since they will not dive that deep alone. How do you wrap plugs for Sacramento River salmon?Double-wrap the plug with fresh sardine and a piece of wild-caught prawn. Jeff also wraps tuna and squid. Start with a loose wrap that keeps the hooks free so you do not tie them to the plug body, then add a couple of wraps on top. More bait draws more bites as long as it does not kill the action. How do you tune a Brad's KillerFish plug?Wrapping bait shifts the center of gravity, so a plug that ran straight can start leaning one way. The fix is the eye: if the plug swims to the right, turn the eye to the left. Test it beside the boat until it dives straight and dances side to side. Out of tune plugs will not get bit. What does massaging the plug mean?It means keeping continuous action on the plug so it never sits dead on the bottom. Pull up on the rod to make the plug dart to one side, then drop the tip so it flutters back. Salmon often hit on that flutter, so be ready for a hard, full-on strike that takes line right away. What is the guide's outlook for the Barge Hole?Jeff says the area is about 2 to 3 weeks out from really good fishing. August, September, and October are the prime months, and a late fall run from November through the end of December produces some of the biggest fish of the season. What is working right now Northwest Oregon's July focus is offshore ocean coho with Chinook mixed in, running 1 to 7 miles out with flashers, hoochies, and various lures and baits. Capt. Coastal cutthroat, catch-and-release sturgeon on the Columbia, and halibut round it out, with albacore tuna still about 100 miles out. What is biting in Northwest Oregon right now?Ocean coho with some Chinook mixed in is the main focus, fished 1 to 7 miles offshore. Capt. David Johnson is also still catching late spring Chinook out of Tillamook Bay. Coastal cutthroat, halibut, and catch-and-release sturgeon on the Columbia are all available too.
