Collins Lake is outstanding, with pretty much limits all week and an 8.5-pound Lassen rainbow. The bubblegum pink Trix Minnow on divers, best at 17 feet, is the top bait with Trigger Scent. Lake Berryessa is on fire for trout, kings, and kokanee to 17 inches from 12 to 45 feet on Trigger Spoons and Chrome Killer Scent. Sacramento River stripers are red hot on minnows.

How good is Collins Lake right now?

Outstanding. Capt. Cal Kellogg had pretty much limits all week, including an 8.5-pound Lassen rainbow and a quadruple hookup landed. Nothing is out-producing the bubblegum pink Trix Minnow rigged with an action disc. Top depths run 15 to 35 feet, and if he had to pick one it would be 17 feet on divers. Trigger Scent is generating about three strikes to one over an unscented bait.

What is happening at Lake Berryessa?

Fantastic. Capt. Nate Kelsch is smacking limits of trout to nearly 5 pounds, kings to nearly 5 pounds, and kokanee to 17 inches. Fish are 12 to 45 feet down and dropping with the warmer weather. He runs Trigger Spoons, Trigger Spoon Juniors, and Optimizers smothered in Chrome Killer Scent. Kokanee and king season is starting now.

What about Amador, Comanche, and Pardee?

Lake Amador fish are dropping down, 15 to 35 feet, on the same spoons run fast with Chrome Killer Scent. Comanche and Pardee are getting tougher as plants slow with warm water. With no boats allowed, make long casts with long leaders and green rainbow-glitter power bait to reach the cooler main-body water.

How are the Sacramento River stripers?

Red hot. Kevin Brock reports lots and lots of fish from Colusa down to the Meridian Bridge and beyond on minnows, water 61 to 62 degrees. Capt. Wes Hoskin and Brett Brady teamed up for five limits per boat by 9 a.m. on a windy day, dragging minnows. The run is likely past its peak as fish spawn off.

How is Don Pedro fishing?

Capt. Monte Smith is still catching kings on frozen shad on a harness, though the bigger fish have moved and are harder to find. Water is pushing 70 degrees on the surface, so use a temperature probe to find the depth band. Kokanee season is starting, and Monte's own Kokanee Slammer is now available.

From the report (Catch America Pro Staff): Nothing is producing as well as the bubblegum pink trout tricks minnow. Top depths anywhere from 15 to 35 feet deep. If I had to choose one depth to fish at, 17 feet would be the depth. I'm using divers right now. I've been using a lot of my trigger scent and it has been an important part of the bite.

Jeff runs 10 ounces of weight to reach bottom in the deep water, with 12 to 18 inch droppers and about a 48 inch leader. The lead gets the plugs down where the fish hold since they will not dive that deep alone. How do you wrap plugs for Sacramento River salmon?Double-wrap the plug with fresh sardine and a piece of wild-caught prawn. Jeff also wraps tuna and squid. Start with a loose wrap that keeps the hooks free so you do not tie them to the plug body, then add a couple of wraps on top. More bait draws more bites as long as it does not kill the action. How do you tune a Brad's KillerFish plug?Wrapping bait shifts the center of gravity, so a plug that ran straight can start leaning one way. The fix is the eye: if the plug swims to the right, turn the eye to the left. Test it beside the boat until it dives straight and dances side to side. Out of tune plugs will not get bit. What does massaging the plug mean?It means keeping continuous action on the plug so it never sits dead on the bottom. Pull up on the rod to make the plug dart to one side, then drop the tip so it flutters back. Salmon often hit on that flutter, so be ready for a hard, full-on strike that takes line right away. What is working right now Northwest Oregon's July focus is offshore ocean coho with Chinook mixed in, running 1 to 7 miles out with flashers, hoochies, and various lures and baits. Capt. Coastal cutthroat, catch-and-release sturgeon on the Columbia, and halibut round it out, with albacore tuna still about 100 miles out. What is biting in Northwest Oregon right now?Ocean coho with some Chinook mixed in is the main focus, fished 1 to 7 miles offshore. Capt.
