Fishing conditions are changing rapidly across California. With water temperatures jumping from 60°F to 70°F in just a few days, even the most seasoned pros are having to rewrite their playbooks. In our latest episode of Catch Talk, we headed to Lake Berryessa with Capt. Nate of Big Nate's Guide Service and Jerry Lanin of TMG Motorsports Guide Service to tackle this "transitional" season head-on.
The star of the show? The official debut of the Trigger Shad.
Why the Trigger Shad is Stealing the Spotlight
As the weather heats up and fish become more selective, the "slow game" becomes essential. While traditional reaction bites rely on high speeds, the Trigger Shad is designed to be an "all-species killer" that works even at slower speeds (1.3 to 1.5 mph).
In the video, the Trigger Shad proved its versatility by landing:
- Eagle Lake Trout
- Smallmouth Bass
- Black Crappie (Slabs!)
Pro Tip from Capt. Nate: Don't be afraid to smother your Trigger Shad in Chrome Killer scent. The erratic action of the lure combined with a strong scent trail is often what it takes to "piss off" the fish and trigger a strike when they are otherwise confused by temperature changes.
Mastering the Setup
To get the most out of the Trigger Shad, Nate recommends:
- Planer Boards: Running them on planer boards allows you to cover more water and keep the lures in the 7–10 ft depth range where active fish are often suspended.
- Leader Length: Use about a 3-foot leader to a ball bearing swivel. This ensures the lure has maximum erratic action without being hindered by your mainline gear.
- Versatility: Whether you're on a downrigger, a planer board, or top-lining, this lure is designed to stay in the strike zone longer.
Adapt to the Water
The lesson from Lake Berryessa is clear: when the bite gets tough, reach into the tackle box and try something new. The Trigger Shad isn't just a lure; it's a pattern-breaker that helps you find success when the old methods stop working.
